Say hello! Introduce yourself!
Rick L - Monday, August 23rd, 2010 3:55 AM PDT
I've had "An Old Colonial's Hard Luck Story" stuck in my head for 17 years; seriously - I heard it maybe twice at my university coffee house in about 1993, and never forgot it. So I was delighted to find it on the Ear Candle site today. But here's the thing: Where the lyric goes "We had a boy in the kitchen/by god I swear he was like a member of the family" I could have swore it was "We had a boy in the kitchen/He was like family/It was hard to leave him behind" (which I remember thinking was fiercely clever.) Am I crazy? Did you ever record a version of this song with alternate lyrics? Thanks for listening to this rambling tale even this long, I'm excited to check out the rest of your site and please feel free to email me. Thanks! J Neo Marvin - Sunday, March 28th, 2010 12:41 AM PDT First real comment in ages! I made the edit, Gary. Don't wanna get anybody in trouble. Love and the rest...Taani Lynn Mc - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 8:54 AM PST Here's a little trivia... Will (Russell Wilkinson) and his family lived across the street from me in La Selva Beach, CA. Infact I use to babysit him, his sister & younger brother. My sister was closer to Will's age so they hung out some. The Wilkinsons moved to England in the early 70's and then returned to La Selva Beach around 1976 or there abouts. I was in shock when I heard about Will's death. What a terrible tragedy!! Random X-Tal Fan in S.F. - Tuesday, November 11th, 2008 12:25 AM PST After hearing the Miriam Makeba tributes on the radio this weekend, I had to pull out "Die Monster Die" and hear "Old Colonial's..." again. What a ridiculously good song and record that is. Saw you and X-Tal in the early 90s at some bar on Haight up near Murio's Trophy Room. I forget the name of the place but I remember the show well, 'cause it was great. Thanks for the music, J. Gotta go check out your new stuff. F McGrury - Monday, October 6th, 2008 12:33 AM PDT Does anyone know whatever happened to Dutch Schultz (Drummer) from F Word? Did he play with Flipper when they first formed? Thanks. DJ Jonathan E. - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 4:59 PM PDT Right at this moment I am listening to the Lee Perry-produced George Faith album, To Be A Lover, on CD 'cos I saw how much silly money was being asked for the vinyl and thought I should put it in a vault! Sucks, doesn't it? But you never know when you'll need to raise cash. Like I'd actually part with it anyway. But sweet, sweet music. Well, after a lot of adventures, some fun, some irritating, in the cyberworld following my stint at Rough Trade, I now live in the woods on an island in the Salish Sea with my wife and two old dogs J Neo Marvin - Monday, September 8th, 2008 11:23 PM PDT Hey, Jonathan! Thanks for stopping by. I have great memories of the 6th St. Rough Trade store. What are you doing now? Jonathan E. - Sunday, September 7th, 2008 3:29 PM PDT "Nadine singer for the Exploding Pintos" Gary Rumor - Sunday, August 10th, 2008 4:03 AM PDT Oh and what about Jenny, Mary Malice's sister, or George and Joy who used to be in Wild Women of Borneo, or Emileo from Bad Posture, or hell I am remembering way too much for my own good, those days were too much fun for anybody to have experienced and lived to tell the tale. What about god that girl who had that studio off of Polk and had like 12 matresses stacked up to the roof and would tell tales of the history of San Francisco because her dad was a big shot realitor and she hung out with John Lee Hooker and the Fuckups and who ever would stop by with a little crystal. Too many memories now...most of them illegal. Gary Rumor - Sunday, August 10th, 2008 3:53 AM PDT There was some asshole promoter back then that I gave a very strong dose of Quaalude to, to get back at him for getting Mary Malice and I kicked off the air. Can't remember the dickheads name, but he managed Simply Red for a while. And was pushing Heavy Metal, because he had a thing for long haired boys, what was his name? Lost too many brain cells. Remember the Fuck ups? and Bad Posture? Fourway was a friend. Or Blind Steve the speed Freak? I wonder if he is still alive? Anybody remember Kathy Norton, the rich girl whose dad was shot by a jealous lover right in front of her? Or [NAME WITHHELD BY REQUEST], the cities best dealer in well I won't say if you don't know. Or Nadine singer for the Exploding Pintos and the Dancing Assholes we went out together for a while. What about Mary St Mary, Bruces wife? Anybody hear from her? Or Ted from Flipper the mad genius, Will's old Girlfriend, or Deana from Frighwig? Anybody have contact with any of them I would appreciate a way to get in touch. Gary Rumor - Sunday, August 10th, 2008 3:41 AM PDT I was one of the original Mindless Thugs, so called by the business community in the Haight because we would smash the windows of the merchants who were trying to drive out the street people, the elderly poor and the blacks to turn the neighborhood into a Yuppie paradise. That was back in 1980. We were a band of anarchist activists, who Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedies claimed to admire. In 80 we hung out at the Grand Piano, Bound Together and the Question Mark was our bar. We were buddies with the Mary Malice and the Rock Against Racism crew and helped put on shows at the Sound Of Music. I had a radio show briefly on KUSF in 82 with Mary Malice. i lived at Art Wars one of the south of Market warehouses, and was friends with the Wild Women of Borneo. I Bob Black came over a couple of times, I hung out at the Tool And Die in the Mission and later moved to that neighborhood. I hung out with Will Shatter and Bruce Loose of Flipper and Rodied for them in 84 when they played in the Sunset Junction district of LA at some punk club there with my ex wifes best friends band Frightwig. I got busted for posession of acid in Malibu when visiting an old buddy there. Then I had a son with Sandy and the rest as they say is history. Muriel J Neo Marvin - Tuesday, February 26th, 2008 7:06 PM PST Cool! Small culture indeed. Uh...pardon my foggy aged memory, but when did we play together? An X-tal show, or more recently? John T - Wednesday, December 19th, 2007 11:29 AM PST Hi, I've been trying to hunt down some of my old Punk pals from the 80s, but without much luck. I was at that YMG outdoor concert, just when I was getting into Punk and stuff and that's where I met Leslie, who was 28 (twice my age!), and who would become a bit of a Punk guardian for me. My best friends were Peter and Jonathan (we attended Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley) and Jenny Seid who later married someone from the Toiling Midgets. Anyways, I moved back to my home country of Sweden in 1982 and never saw anyone again. I'm really curious as to what happened to them. Any clues at all would be appreciated (you don't have any crowd pics, do you?). G E light - Sunday, December 16th, 2007 2:02 PM PST Did you get the stuff I sent the second time around to ear candle: interview tapes etc.? J Neo Marvin - Monday, November 26th, 2007 11:59 AM PST Hmmm well, they're on the CDs/tapes/albums, typos and all. I'm not in a hurry to post them, but since you made a specific request: AN OLD COLONIAL'S HARD LUCK STORY Ch: Another old colonial comes with a hard luck story (x4) VERSE 1: "We had a big plantation We had servants A smashing view of the jungle These things belonged to us But we had to leave The beautiful country that we owned, It's so disgraceful An affront to our dignity" (chorus) VERSE 2 "The natives weren't so bad Sometimes you had to beat them a bit Sometimes they got lazy Sometimes they got ideas But we had a boy in the kitchen By God, I swear he was almost like a member of the family Those were the days" BRIDGE: You might see them on the streetcar You might see them in the store They might stumble on a piece of jewelry Or hear Miriam Makeba on the radio Then their eyes get misty And they reminisce (chorus) VERSE 3 "I wouldn't go there now Look at the way they run themselves I guess it goes to show We were right all along These are such hard times And I miss my life of privelege We had servants (we had servants) We had servants (we had servants)" etc etc VERSE 4 Oh you poor suffering creature Don't bend my ear again You spend your old age whining Because you did not get the warning Don't complain to me You're lucky to be alive You're goodamn lucky you got your ignorant white ass out in time! "Revolution is not pretty", Sometimes it's not even beautiful It's not even always just When it's just too late. (Chorus) (I actually met a couple of people like this back then! Thus, the song) G E Light - Wednesday, November 21st, 2007 10:13 AM PST I'm looking for early lyrics, from Reason . . . and Die Monster Die, esp. "Another Old Colonials' . . .". Thanks. G E Light - Saturday, November 17th, 2007 11:39 AM PST D'oh. When I have everything collated, I'll send it to the P.O. box for ear candle productions. In the interim this lengthy excursus might interest you, esp. bits about Henry's Dress, MBV Loveless show at Slim's and new Bay Area resident Weasel Walter's now guess late Flying Luttenbachers project; just my fake genre of 90s music which allowed me to talk about disparate groups together: http://www.furious.com/PERFECT/90snoise.html J Neo Marvin - Thursday, November 15th, 2007 8:18 AM PST G E: Thanks for the memories! It was fun playing at KZSU way back when. Your blog is a nice combination of culture and scenery. I appreciate all the mentions of X-tal there; it's good that some people remember. I'll take this opportunity to encourage you and anyone else to hop over to the Ear Candle site: http://www.earcandleproductions.com, where you can preview and buy the three Content Providers CDs and the new X-tal retrospective. (Gotta keep promoting this stuff because unlike in the old days, we ARE the record label! End of commercial...) We'll be putting up some more footage from the 2006 reunion show when we get to it. It IS on our to-do list! Where can I see/hear these interviews? They sound fascinating. Belated response to the honorable Ben Cohen: Well of course I remember you. How could I forget the big IBD X-tal/Sister Double Happiness dinner party in Munich in 1994? I saw both the Pies and Sister Double many many times. My wife and I often run into Joe at Whole Foods these days. He gave me a business card that reads "Joe Pop-O-Pie, General Nuisance". Still a character. Ah, the book. As the Rastas say, "soon come". I still have much more writing to do, and Verse Chorus Press does things at their own speed, which matches my writing schedule all too well. First comes the Puncture book next year (cross fingers), then comes yours truly. Saw the Chatterbox book. Wish they'd included a picture of the Psychic Orphans though. G E Light - Saturday, November 10th, 2007 6:00 PM PST We met years ago at the KZSU WNL Live on Stage gig in the Little Theater behind Mem Aud. You signed my "Reason is . . ." and "Die Monster Die" CDs while in the very "green" room. My musical memories of Bay Area can be found on The Nevermind Aesthetic blog under the May 2006 entry "Our Frisco." Plus writing that game me a chance to take free and easy shots at iTunes and Joel Selvin all at once. I've enjoyed viewing your fascinating photo collection and our linking to it when blogging over the years. I'll have to check out the new material now that I'm far away from the Bay Area in Mississippi. I too have done sme interviewing ver the years. Bits of interview of Kevin Shields and Weasel Walter appeared ina PSF piece. I managed t chat with Jon Langford on the phone a his studio and did an email iv with Sally Timms for a piece on the Mekons relationship to alt country. Recently I did an IV in Chattanooga with Vratislav Brabenc and Eva Turnova from Plastic People of the Universe. Anyway love the site. Keep up the good fight . . . Ben Cohen - Monday, October 15th, 2007 10:36 AM PDT Hi J I stumbled upon your fabulous punk rock scrapbook; when is your book coming out with more photos? I'm just one more of the 3,999,543 people who claim to have been at the ground zero of the SF punk scene back in the day, but you may (or not) also remember me as a drummer in the Pop 0 Pies (second in drunken obnoxiousness only to Joe Pie) and guitarist with Sister Double Happiness (less obnoxious, but equally drunk). I recently came across a book by Alfie of Chatterbox fame, titled appropriately enough, "Chatterbox: History of a Bar" which may interest you as more SF music history documentation. Ben J Neo Marvin - Thursday, September 6th, 2007 3:00 PM PDT Here's what little I know: Sel Wahng (as he's known now) is now an FTM transgender activist and academic who lives and works in New York. I don't know how interested he is in reconnecting with old friends from the old days since he doesn't answer my e-mails. But I'd love to be surprised one day. (Nice to hear from you again, by the way. That was quite a road trip.) Char - Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 9:15 PM PDT I am trying to find Selena Whang, and I came across your site. It is great fun, looking at your pics and all. I lived with Selena in SF, and even dated Jim B for a while. Lol. I have great memories of a road trip I took with Xtal to Humboldt... I know a few Jens, but I don't think you're any of the ones I'm thinking of), it may be a challenge to find the old Alias catalog, but I still see them floating around the used bins and being sold online. The Alias label seems to have vanished in a puff of smoke, and their website appears to have been left untended for years. We'd like to get a hold of our old stuff again and will one day, but it's going to take more time and attention than I'm able to give right now. So, in the meantime....welcome to the exciting world of rare record collecting! We shot a lot of footage of the whole show and have plans to put together a documentary or documentaries of X-tal and the other bands that played, but are wondering what the best outlet for such a project would be. Who would buy it? It will be a labor of love to do it, of course, but still labor nonetheless. I look forward to doing it, though. In the meantime, glad you liked the show and the clip. Did you get a copy of Who Owns Our Dreams? At the moment, it's the only X-tal item in print, and we are trying to get it out there to all the old fans (and maybe some new ones, too). Again, thanks for coming and leaving your feedback. It makes a huge difference to hear from people that were inspired by what we did. Well hello, Jeff. I'm quite well and hope you are too. "Next time"?......I don't know if/when that will ever be. Maybe if people start posting in droves and demanding another show, there might then be cause to discuss the possibility. In the meantime, life goes on. There are three Content Providers albums out now that I am highly proud of (in my own not-exactly-objective opinion, they pick up where X-tal left off), and more projects in the works from the Blame and the Experimental Bunnies, as well as Ear Candle Radio, the Noodle Brain Productions TV show, another new public access TV idea we're currently kicking around focusing more on music, plus possibly some kind of live musical theatre piece...all kinds of stuff. Reunions are fun and inspirational, but my heart is in doing new things. It keeps one young to continue looking forward and not get too caught up in past glories. Thanks for dropping a line, and stay in touch. jeff diamond - Monday, February 27th, 2006 2:19 PM PST damn! there was a reunion show? Oh well....maybe next time. We will have a new compilation of songs from the band's final lineup that were never previously released in the US, along with a couple of live recordings from Europe. It cost a bit to make, so by all means, tell your friends to come to the show and take some off our hands. BTW, rehearsals are starting to sound real good. I think we're going to have a great show. See you on the 21st. pizzablast - Thursday, December 8th, 2005 1:21 AM PST looking forward to the xtal reunion show. wow... been a long time since i saw you guys... i think at the komotion? hey... your music is still timely. are you going to have any cd's to sell at the concert? it would be cool to do a collectors "best of". Christine Haupert-Wemmer FKA Houdini - Monday, June 27th, 2005 1:39 AM PDT For anyone who remembers Ruby Zebra (AKA Slick Plastic, Otis Brady, Alvin M. White Jr., among assorted others): He passed away, August 2003, at his family's home in Swansboro, North Carolina. He'd been living there for a number of years, after leaving New York City. Anyone wishing to know more, or who can pass the word on to others who knew and loved his incomparable ass in San Francisco (or anywhere else) please do so. Feel free to contact me at chwemmerarts@earthlink.net (living in New Orleans now). P.S. To Susan Miller (surely yes, Jules), Patti, Kevin, and others who comprehend Ruby's very special relationship with death and ritual, we really should gather in North Carolina and howl him down. He died alone. Jules Normington - Tuesday, May 17th, 2005 5:41 PM PDT Susan Miller...(surely not?)...lost contact for so long...email me at popodudi@bigpond.net.au Those photos of us at Inks, Tux/moon, Camille gigs, and at the Folsom digs above the fuck pad never fail to bring back the best of memories. Where's Ruby Zebra these days, I lost contact with him too a couple of years after he went back East...and Kevvy...and Steve Demardes.......and that Patti Ann Ramelli. I'm still in Sydney, still in music/records etc., wife just left and it's prob a blessing....moving on well....tonnes more to say. Lots of love, Jules J Neo Marvin - Saturday, April 16th, 2005 10:24 AM PDT ...or are you saying that you have a studio? This message is very hard to understand. Whatever. Good luck. J Neo Marvin - Saturday, April 16th, 2005 10:17 AM PDT Put aside all dreams of big breaks that come out of nowhere. Buy yourself a small, simple portastudio of some kind (they have digital ones these days, though I have yet to try one out) and learn to use it. Record your songs. Listen to them critically. Get feedback from your friends. Cultivate your craft. Play open mikes. Copying your idols is a good step, but if you're serious about what you are doing, you must find your own voice. Don't be so desperate. Desperation scares people. Don't expect to ever make money off this. If you do, be grateful for your good fortune. BTW, spell check is your friend. Use it. You'll make a better impression. jeffy - Tuesday, April 12th, 2005 8:13 PM PDT Good day to you, am a talented artist who have some nice lyrics and sound which i know in no time if been puting to the maeket meaning been producede will saleand all so have some nice writen music which yet to been showed. so i wana know if u could let me make use of your studio or i should sale the music to and of we will both benefit fromor i could be writing music for you why you produce and of which after producing the profit made will be shaered or if u dont want it that way u can be buying the off from me why u produce amd make yor own mneycos i really wanna put my talent out to be known.am asking this from you cos i need it so bad and i dont how else to put my music out so pease have an undestanding mind as we work. pleas if this is pleased by you get back to me with details on how to starte. It was a dangerous yet more innocent time back then. Gary Rumor - Saturday, March 12th, 2005 6:40 PM PST I hung out with Flipper and Frightwig back in the early to mid eighties. I moved to SF from New York City in 1980. I was doing Rock Against Raciscm shows there. I managed a club "Studio 10" at 10 Bleecker Street, I lived with the Yippies and knew Legs MacNeil, booked bands like Bad Brains, DOA, Terrorists, Patty Smith's Band etc. I moved to SF in the Spring of 1980 and met the Rock Against Racism crew there, Mary Malice and others. I mostly was involved with the Anarchist scene at first, doing grafitti, postering, anti gentrification stuff with my gang "Mindless Thugs" but we got too hot and by the end of that summer the cops had a reward out for our arrest, Feinstein who was mayor then, even went on the 6 oclock news talking about how she was out to get terrorists like the mindless thugs. We were superstars of the underground. A band was named after us. We were invited to all the hot house parties. People would walk up to us on the street and ask us to trash this or that nasty business person who deserved a brick through their windows. The merchants in the Haight Ashburry were terrified of us, and revolt was in the air. Jello Biafra called us his hero's in some local magazine that did a heros issue that year. In that atmosphere my freinds and I could get into any club for free, we were on all the guest lists. The Mab was our hangout or the caffes in the Haight like the Grand Piano. We made fake bus passes so people could ride for free, we intimidated land lords who were trying to kick out old tenants, we defended the street people who hung out on Haight street. We camped out on city hall lawn when the Art Warehouse South Of Market was evicted and we worked as security at the Rock Against Racism gigs. That gives you a flavor of who I was and where I was in the scene in 1980 when I first heard of Flipper. Flipper came along that summer and I first heard of them as one of the bands that played at an RAR gig, their buddies the Toiling Midgets stamped their names all over the books in the library at the American Indian Center where we put on an RAR Gig. It did not go down well and Flipper and their buddies were on the radical shit list for a while that year. You have to understand for a struggling and in San Francisco at that time it meant something. A lot of the club owners were commies and we fringe anarchists were the natural allies and supporters for bands like Flipper. They wanted to make good so the were the band playing at the Rock Against Work gig being put on by Bob Black at the Plaza Down Town SF. It was a no permit gig and there was a good chance the band and the audiance would get roughed up by the cops. This was Labor Day and by then there was a $10,000 reward out for the Mindless Thugs, so just to show up was risky, but they did and we did. It won Flipper its radical reputation and street bragging rights. After that they were cool again. I split town. Went to New York and then to Boulder, Co, where I was a DJ on KGNU radio doing the Friday night punk spot and laying low, but before long the DA in SF called my radio station and I was told that I was a suspect in a fire bombing. Well I told them that I was never involved with anything like that. I had dissolved the Mindless Thugs for that very reason, the next step would be more serious revolutionary actions like the Weather Underground or the SLA of a few years before or like the Badder Meinhoff gang in Germany, that wasn't my style. I liked making fun of the enemy, a pie in the face was about as violent as I was willing to get. But my rep had followed me. I lost my job in Colorado and I went to Minneapolis where I worked for the COOP newspaper and started the first modern world music show at KFAI radio station. I played modern African music mostly. I met Souxie of the Banshees fame and got drunk with her after her gig there in 81. Mineapolis had a great scene and I was safe there, but I couldn't take the cold. I headed back to Colorado and then in the spring of 82 I went back to San Francisco. There I moved in with friends who had a warehouse South of Market called "Art Wars", Wild Women of Borneo lived next door, they were like their contemporaries the "Slits" way before Frightwig, there were the Wild Women. Joe Pop O Pies lived there before me, I was his replacement, my friend Jory introduced me and I was famous for the Mindless thug days, of a year and a half before. I could still get on guest lists, our roomate Erin, was bartendress at the Tool and Die, a punk club on Valencia Street, down the block from the old Deaf Club. The FuckUP, DK's, Flipper, and MDC played there, it was a hot and sweaty scene, I loved it, we would slam dope and coke and go check it out drinking free beers from our roomate. Erin was the sister of the drummer of Christian Death and that meant that all their label mates would stay with us when they came up from LA to visit San Francisco, that was how I met El Duce and the Mentors. El Duce at 7 am screaming at a 14 year old "Suck My Cock" and swigging on a bottle was a fond memory as I walked by geting ready for work that morning. I used to love catching Flipper at that time and their slow core psychedelic sound was one of my favorites. I got into the speed underground with its satanic overtones at the time. Bruce was heavily involved as was Shawn of the Fuck Ups and Four Way of Bad Posture. I did a radio show breifly with Mary Malice on KUSF before Howie Klein and his heavy metal fag boys replaced us. After that I was more and more into the drug underground and less in the political one. That is where I met Sandy and her key club. It was a secret society of speed freaks. There were a group of women speed queens in SF at the time, they would have the musicians and the interesting caractors over and we would stay up all night talking, playing music and taking crystal meth. I was there in 83 and 84, losing a job and becoming a dealer. I ended up living at the house of Simply Red and having a supermarket of top quality substances. Bruce was one of our top customers being a good freind of Sandy and Deana of Frightwig was her best buddy they grew up in Fremont together. Sandy was into the white face way before Madonna, she dressed a lot of the underground people on the scene at the time, I had the goodies and she had the fashion. We were among the dealer elite, Bruce would bring over demo tapes for us to approove in the spring of 84. I ended up roadieing for them and Frightwig on a tour in LA, they only played one gig at a punk club in Sunset Junction. I gave them all Crystal LSD and everyone was tripping at that gig. We then went to an after hours club in Hollywood with El Duce who made noise until we were let in. After that we all went to Erin's new place in Silver Lake and we stayed up talking into the morning, Sandy in the van holding court, Bruce and I flirting with Erin all night and into the morning talking about everything under the sun. Bruce was an ernest, sincere young idealist who loved speed and who had a hippie mom up in mendocino, he was a nice guy, not a tough guy and everyone wanted to protect him. I was a dealer, playing with guns and knives and my girlfreind was a fashion speed queen, we all reveled in our outlaw existence, nobody worked, we were haveing fun. J Neo Marvin - Tuesday, February 15th, 2005 3:42 PM PST Unfortunately Verna, I never met Will, though we apparently went to the same high school, so I couldn't offer much beyond hearsay and gossip, and a proper book (which Flipper deserves) requires more than that. I've only met Bruce and Ted, and wouldn't say I know either of them very well, and I don't have a clue as to their whereabouts these days. For a while I was friends with Bruce's ex-wife Meri St. Mary, but we're no longer on speaking terms. (Note: I'm pleased to report Meri has turned her life around since this post, and we are friends again.) Other than that, I was a big fan, but I wouldn't presume to be a source of hard facts on these guys. Best of luck with your book. Verna - Tuesday, February 15th, 2005 10:43 AM PST Writing a book about Flipper, Russell "Will Shatter" Wilkinson's band. Need background info about him. If you have it, please e-mail me. J Neo Marvin - Tuesday, September 7th, 2004 3:41 PM PDT Thanks for the corrections and clarifications, Paul. I'm glad I did remember your name correctly. We were all a little paler and skinnier then. Paul - Monday, September 6th, 2004 11:15 PM PDT Regarding http://www.jneomarvin.com/scrapbook/pages/28C.htm, yes, that's me attempting to play guitar. The bassist shown in the background is Ian, who moved to Amsterdam not long after her Atrocity days. Wow, I was so pale and skinny then. I actually think I look healthier now. On another page you comment that Atrocity only got so far as recording a demo tape. Actually, a couple of those tracks wound up on a split 7" (w/ Hate From Ignorance of Washington DC). It's so obscure that I don't even have one. Thanks for taking the time to post the pix. Annie - Wednesday, August 25th, 2004 1:34 PM PDT Hey, Neo! Jill told me about your website. J Neo Marvin - Saturday, July 3rd, 2004 12:58 PM PDT Now that is a bit of Flipper trivia I did NOT know. Of course, I didn't really come out of my shell till late in my freshman year, really, so I don't think young "Russ" and I ever crossed paths. Wonder if he was one of those guys who used to smoke behind the F building? We'll be doing a lot of shows very very soon. I will let you know. chris anderson - Friday, July 2nd, 2004 8:11 PM PDT Hi. How am I? Very well, thanks. Im 4-tracking nowadays and watching my 14 year old daughter grow up, sing and play cello. Its fun. I plan to catch one of your shows soon, I live in Berkeley but know how to get to S.F. from here. Say, did you know Russell Wilkinson at Aptos High when we were freshmen? He left halfway through and became Will Shatter! Say What? Word up my bitch! There was an article about him in the datebook sometime in the 90's that filled me in. KOOKY! No blame from me after all these years. I think writing that post really cleared a lot up in my mind about what went wrong then, and how little it matters now. Thanks for the POV. mike - Monday, April 5th, 2004 7:27 AM PDT J, I really enjoyed reading your memories of your Bucketful of Brains interview. Just a thought: Though I haven't read the interview and obviously wasn't there, I wouldn't be absolutely sure that the interview had an "agenda." I've written stories and later heard back that I was "biased" or "had an agenda," and it's almost never the case. As a writer, sometimes you're just trying to do the best you can with the quotes you have, and if the most colorful quotes you get are also your most opinionated/arrogant, you can't really blame the interviewer for using them! Yes, the interviewer needs to exercise care and make sure s/he's quoting in context, but the interviewee needs to be careful, too. This is one reason I prefer to run Q&As - there's much less room for errors in judgment on either side. But you shouldn't feel bad. During my brief period in a performing live band, I found myself on the other end of the the interview process, and was horrified to read my own arrogant comments. It felt like cosmic revenge somehow. :) J Neo Marvin - Tuesday, March 30th, 2004 11:12 AM PST I am getting loads of viral-looking spam lately. I just deleted an awfully suspicious looking link from the guestbook. Note: If you put a link with no note, no explanation here, it will be deleted as soon as I see it. So many voices from the past have gotten in touch as a result of the photos; it's really gratifying. Good to know you're still at Southern after all this time. If you want to wax even more nostalgic, I have a new page up with some good shots of your ex-homeboys, Ruin. Hard to believe all this stuff is from 20 years ago. Now I'm a craggy old folk singer with an accounting job still trying to make a difference, and you're in the UK helping to run a venerably radical recording studio/label. Life goes on.
