"Old Colonial" was an attempt to write something in the "Soweto township jive" vein. I had been listening to a lot of that music, as well as Thomas Mapfumo's Chimurenga records from Zimbabwe, and I was hooked on the stuff, but at the same time, I thought it was ridiculous to take the sort of route that Paul Simon did and couple that sort of music with lyrics about cinematographer's parties, so instead I wrote a broad Tom Lehrer-like satire of clueless white settlers in an African country who had no clue why the natives were so pissed off at them. It worked, I think.
